Day 10

Topic: Believers Baptism

Title: Submerge & Emerge

Truth Verses: Acts 8:36  As they travelled along the road, they came to some water and the

eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?”

Truth Unpacked: An ordinance can be defined as a practice prescribed by the Messiah to be

performed by the church as an outward sign of the saving truth of the Christian faith. Baptism

fulfils the three qualifications of an ordinance; firstly, it was commanded by the Messiah;

secondly, it was observed by the church in the book of Acts; and thirdly the Epistles expound

the theological significance of the outward rite.  In these next two devotionals I aim to pose

some questions for your prayerful consideration.

Who should be baptised?  Jesus stated in the Great Commission that all that believe and are baptised shall be saved Mark 16:15, 16.  The Apostles command was to believers: at Jerusalem Acts 2:38, 41; at Samaria Acts 8:26-39; from Ethiopia Acts 8:26-39 and at Ephesus Acts 19:2, 5. Baptism, by immersion in water, was also the experience of whole families; Lydia’s household Acts 16:14, 15; The Philippian jailor’s household Acts 16:27-35 and Stephanas’ household 1 Cor1:16

Why should we be baptised?

a.To testify publicly of the death, burial and  resurrection of Jesus Christ, symbolically burying the old life and being raised to newness of life  Romans 6:3-6

b.To identify publicly with Christ’s defeat of Satan Colossians 2:12,15

c. To signify we have been clothed with (put on) Chris Galatians 3:27

d.To testify outwardly of the cleansing that has occurred inwardly by the blood of Jesus (Rev 1:5) and by the word of God (John 15:3)

e.To obey the apostolic command to repent and be baptised  Acts 2:38,41 & 10:46

f. To demonstrate our love of Jesus publicly  Mark 8:38 & John 14:15

Pray: Lord I want to be your disciple. Thank you for the leading of your Holy Spirit to teach me all things, guiding me into all truth.
