Day 11
Topic: Believers Baptism
Title: Dunkin’ – an optional extra?
Truth Verses: Acts 8:36-39 & 10:47 As they travelled along the road, they came to some water and
the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” And he
gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and
Philip baptized him. When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took
Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing... “Surely no one
can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as
we have.”
When should we be baptised? There was no cause for delay in the early church!
-
· The same day Acts 2:41
-
· when they believed Acts 8:12, 37, 38
-
· the same hour Acts 16:33
How should we be baptised?
-
Into the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit Matt 28:19
-
In the name Lord Jesus Christ Acts 2:38, Acts 8:16 & Acts 19:5
Truth Story: We think too of ‘the Dunkers’. Dunker was the nickname for a people of faith that originated in 1708 near the village of Schwarzenau, Germany, along the Eder River. Originally, calling themselves Neue Täufer (New Baptists) known as Schwarzenau Brethren they were called Dunkers by outsiders because they fully immersed or “dunked” their baptismal candidates in nearby streams. Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?
Pray: Thank you Lord for this outward sign of faith’s inward reality. Lord, thanks for trailblazers like the Anabaptists; people who helped restore New Testament truth. When leaders declared drowning "the best antidote to Anabaptism," Lord help us to contend for the faith once delivered to the saints.
Lord we thank you for people that follow your divine ordinances even when ancient laws condoned the death penalty for any who practiced believer’s baptism.
