Day 25
Topic: Partnering with a local church
Title: Building blocks from the 1st church
Truth Verse: Acts 2:42 They continually devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles, to
fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.
Truth Story: Jenga is a game made of wooden blocks testing manual dexterity and mental
strength. Its popularity is seen in the fact that there are over 50 million games sold worldwide
(equivalent of 2.7 billion Jenga blocks). Jenga is played with 54 wooden blocks which are stacked
into a tower (18 levels of 3). Without going into all the rules and regulations it is sufficient to say
that the game ends when the tower falls in even a minor way—in other words, any block falls from
the tower, other than the piece being knocked out to move to the top. The loser is the person who made the
tower fall. However, if one or more blocks fall but all players agree that they can be put back on the tower
for play to resume, that is in keeping with the cooperative aspect of the game.
Truth Unpacked: I liken Acts 2 to our full quota spiritual Jenga tower. Let us ask some questions
based on this early church example. No one wants to lose out, by any ‘building block’ being
removed from its rightful place.
1. Apostolic Teaching v42 Is the church a Christ-centred (teaching) community?
2. Fellowship v42 Does the church have the ‘great commandment principle’
(see Matthew 22:37-40) as the basis for their relationships?
3. Breaking Bread v42 Does the church celebrate the work of Christ?
4. Prayers v42 Is the church involved in intercessory prayer?
Prayer:
Lord, we pray for our leaders that they will not miss any spiritual building block you desire to restore to your church. Restore Lord – not by might, not by power but by your Spirit Lord. Raise up the old age foundations Lord and be the repairer of the broken walls in our day. Amen
