What are the main tasks performed by the Holy Spirit?

Upon the Sinner

·         To convict of sin ,righteousness & judgment to come  Jn 16:8-11

·         People are saved by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the

          Holy Ghost  Tit3:5                                                                                         

·         He is the convincing & convicting agent that applies  the seed of the

          word of God to a person’s heart and life Heb 4:12/ Eph 6:17     

                                             

Upon the Believer

·         Salvation only happens  when a person is born of the Spirit  Jn3:3,5,8

·         To claim to be a Christian we must have the Spirit dwell  in us  Rom 8:9

·         He always brings glory to Jesus Jn16:13,14

·         He transforms our hearts and minds to make us into Christ’s image (character)  2 Cor 3:18   Rom12:2

·         He helps us discern (test) false spirits 1 Jn 4:1-3/2:22

 

The Baptism (defined as immersion, submerge, put under) of the Holy Spirit equips and enables us to be productive  witnesses Acts 1:8                               

What is the baptism in the Holy Spirit?

1.   It is the promise of the Father Luke 24:49/Acts 1:4/2:39

2.   It is enabling power to be Christ’s witnesses Acts 1:8

3.   A definite experience which we can know we have / have not received  Acts 19:2,6

4.   It is part of the proper Christian birth Acts 2:38

5.   It is commanded by Christ for those that believe should receive  - ‘be filled’ Jn 7:37-39 /Eph 5:18

                                                                                       

What is the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit?

·         people who have a stammering tongue Isa 33:19

·         they began to speak with other tongues Acts 2:3/10:46/19:6

·         different kinds of tongues 1 Cor 12:28

·         Paul encourages everyone to speak in tongues 1 Cor 14:5,13,18

·         this manifestation is not to be prevented  1 Cor 14:39

 

1)   It is one of the signs of a believer  Mk 16:17

2)   By it God speaks to man 1 Cor 14:21

3)   By it man speaks to God 1 Cor 4:2

4)   It is a way of building ourselves up 1 Cor 14:4 Jude v 20

5)   It is a way to magnify God  Acts 10:45

6)   It is a means of spiritual worship 1 Cor 14:15

7)   It helps us pray according to God’s will  Rom 8:26

8)   It is given to those that obey Christ’s Lordship (boss) Acts 5:32

 

Ten reasons why believers should receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

1)   Christ and the Apostles exemplified the need for the Holy Spirits anointing in service  Matt 3:16/Acts 2:37-39

2)   The Holy Spirit gives power to live a holy life Rom 8:1,2,13

3)   The Holy Spirit gives power (ability & enabling) to witness  Acts 1:8/2:14/4:31-33

4)   The Holy Spirit is the refreshing spoken of in prophecy  Isa 28:11,12

5)   The Holy Spirit will enables true worship of God  Jn4:23,24/Acts 2:11/10:46/Eph 5:18-20                                                       

6)   The Holy Spirit will teach and guide us in all truth  Jn 16:12,13

7)   The Holy Spirit baptism is a command Eph 5:18

8)   The Holy Spirit will help you to pray supernaturally  Rom8:26,27 1 Cor 14:4,15

9)   The Holy Spirit’s in-filling  is necessary to exercise the 9 Gifts of the Spirit 1Cor 12

·         3 Gifts of Inspiration and Edification  - to speak

10) The Holy Spirit is necessary to help us evidence ‘Christ-like character’; known as the 9 fruit of the Spirit  

                                        Galatians 5:22,23

·         3 in relation to God - love, joy, peace

·         3 in relation to others - long-suffering, gentleness, goodness

·         3 in relation to ourselves - faithfulness, meekness, self-control

 

How to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Acts 9:17

·         It must be preceded by a true salvation experience of repentance Acts 2:38

Renounce sin by true repentance

Request the Holy Spirit to overwhelm you

Receive God’s gift by faith

Release your faith in yielding your tongue

Remember it is a free gift , received by faith, and not earned Gal 3:2

·         Ask Christ to give you this gift and He will  Luke 11:13/Acts 11:3

·         Seek God in prayer  Acts 8:15

·         Expect to receive this gift by  laying on of hands Acts 8:19

·         Exercise your faith by speaking in an unknown tongue 1 Cor 14:27

Remember, it is the Holy Spirit who ‘gives the utterance’, but you must speak. You will speak and He will tell you what to say’  Acts 2:4                       

·         Once you’ve received, be renewed in your new tongue daily 2 Cor 4:16
